As the world processes the results of the 2024 election cycle, one thing we should all agree on is that elections have consequences. The 2024 elections will undoubtedly have consequences for our association and its members. The pressing question is the extent of these consequences.
First, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who was willing to put their names on the ballot and run for office. Running for public office is no small feat, especially in today’s political climate. Your willingness to serve speaks volumes about your dedication. We also extend our thanks to all the candidates—both incumbents and challengers—who participated in our candidate review and recommendation process through KPAC.
We also want to acknowledge several “Friendly Incumbents” (those with a 75% voting record or better) who were not successful in their re-election bids. Pro-public education forces lost four key champions on election night: Representative Dennis Miller, Representative Allison Hougland, Representative Jason Probst, Senator and Senator Usha Reddi. Each of these legislators was a steadfast supporter of public education. We thank them for their service and wish them all the best.
Quick and Simple: Republicans expanded their majorities in both the Kansas House and the Kansas Senate.
Election 2024, THE CONSEQUENCES
The impact of elections often takes years to fully understand.
Common sense suggests that these results could pose challenges for Kansas students, educators, and public schools. Recent Kansas history shows that this kind of political dynamic has, at times, been unfavorable. We want to reassure Kansans, but the reality is that the future may be more difficult than we hope.
CHARTING AHEAD
The composition of the legislature shifts every two years. While the changes vary in significance, 21, 63, and 1 remain the critical numbers in the legislative process. It takes 21 votes to pass a bill in the Kansas Senate, 63 votes to pass legislation in the Kansas House, and the Governor’s signature to make it law.
Quick and Simple: With these key numbers in mind, Kansas students, educators and public schools cannot achieve success without the voice and advocacy of all political parties in the legislative process.
Our work continues.
